Sector Reforms, Tariff Adjustments, and Reasons Why FG Warned MTN, Airtel, and Glo to Improve Service Quality or Face Sanctions

INTRO: The reasons why Federal Government of Nigeria warned MTN, Airtel, and Glo to improve service quality or face sanctions were outlined by Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, in a statement on Sunday. He said recent reforms have stabilised the sector and removed excuses for poor network performance. Here are five key reasons why FG warned MTN, Airtel, and Glo to improve service quality or face sanctions.

1. Sector Reforms Have Removed Structural Excuses for Poor Service: The first of the reasons why FG warned MTN, Airtel, and Glo to improve service quality or face sanctions is that government has addressed long-standing barriers. Tijani said Nigeria’s connectivity gaps were “largely structural, driven by years of underinvestment and constraints on operators.” Through long-term infrastructure planning and immediate sector-stabilisation measures, government has “restored sustainability and investor confidence.” With those fixes in place, the minister insisted there is no justification for continued poor call quality and data speed.

2. Government Has Secured Major Infrastructure Funding: Another of the reasons why FG warned MTN, Airtel, and Glo to improve service quality or face sanctions is new investment. Tijani noted that “funding has been secured with support from the World Bank for Project BRIDGE,” plus a special purpose vehicle to deliver nationwide open access fibre. Deployment of fibre will commence, alongside new tower rollouts through NUCAP, before the end of the year, with expanded satellite capability. These interventions are expected to “transform connectivity over the next two to five years,” giving telcos the backbone they need.

Tariff Adjustments and Policy Reforms Restored Operator Profitability: The government has also tackled immediate challenges, adding to the reasons why FG warned MTN, Airtel, and Glo to improve service quality or face sanctions. Tijani said government stabilised the sector through “tariff adjustments, the designation of telecom infrastructure as critical national infrastructure, tax harmonisation efforts, and broader macroeconomic reforms.” According to him, the reforms “have restored operator profitability and created a more transparent and market-driven environment, giving telcos the capacity to invest in network improvements.”

Responsibility Now Lies With Operators to Deliver: With reforms complete, the FG says accountability shifts to industry players. “It is now the responsibility of telecom operators such as MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, and T2 to take all necessary steps to resolve network challenges and deliver the level of service Nigerians expect,” Tijani stressed. That expectation is central to the reasons why FG warned the telcos to improve service quality or face sanctions. The minister said the Nigerian Communications Commission has been “fully empowered to monitor performance, enforce standards, and ensure compliance.”

5. NCC Will Enforce Standards and Sanction Defaulters: The final of the reasons why FG warned MTN, Airtel, and Glo to improve service quality or face sanctions is regulatory enforcement. Tijani said Nigerians should begin to see “measurable improvements in call quality, data speed and network coverage,” adding that government will rely on regulatory reports and user feedback to hold operators accountable. The NCC will ensure consumers receive value for money, “with sanctions expected for defaulting operators.”

Conclusion

Tijani emphasized that when the administration assumed office, “it was clear that Nigeria’s connectivity challenges were structural.” Now, with Project BRIDGE, NUCAP towers, and satellite expansion set to roll out, the reasons why FG issued the warning come down to one message: the foundation has been fixed, and telcos must now deliver.
