Disenfranchisement, Democratic Principles, and Reasons Why Amaechi Rejects ADC Presidential Primary Results

INTRO: Former Minister of Transportation and ADC presidential aspirant, Rotimi Amaechi, has rejected the outcome of the African Democratic Congress presidential primaries, calling the results “concocted” and undemocratic. In a statement posted on his X platform Wednesday, he outlined why he won’t accept the announced outcome. Here are five key reasons why Amaechi rejects ADC presidential primary results.

1. Widespread Disenfranchisement of Party Members: The foremost of the reasons why Amaechi rejects ADC presidential primary results is alleged voter exclusion. Amaechi claimed the exercise was “marred by widespread voter disenfranchisement,” with “a large percentage of party members” denied the opportunity to participate. He stated: “There’s no way that about eighty percent of members of the party were not allowed to vote, and you expect me to accept such results.” For him, a primary that locks out most members cannot reflect the will of the ADC.

2. Process Failed His Stated Conditions for Acceptance: Another of the reasons why Amaechi rejects ADC presidential primary results is the failure to meet his public conditions. The former Rivers State governor said he “had initially stated that I will only accept the outcome of the primaries if the process was free, fair, and transparent, and I stand by my word.” He argued that the conduct of the election “failed to meet those standards,” making acceptance impossible. “I unequivocally reject the concocted results being announced,” he wrote.

3. ADC Engaged in Practices It Criticizes in APC and INEC: Amaechi accused the ADC leadership of hypocrisy, a major point among the reasons why Amaechi rejects ADC presidential primary results. “A party that criticizes the ruling APC and INEC for vote buying, rigging and writing of results, cannot be engaged in vote buying, writing of results, and other electoral malpractices that lead to the disenfranchisement of voters who are party members,” he said. He insisted the ADC cannot claim to be an alternative while replicating the same “impunity” it condemns.

Results Don’t Reflect ADC’s Founding Vision for Nigerians: The former minister said the primaries betrayed the purpose of the ADC, adding to the reasons why Amaechi rejects ADC presidential primary results. “The whole idea of the ADC was to give the Nigerian people a platform, to amplify the voices of the downtrodden, and make Nigeria a better place for everyone irrespective of backgrounds, ethnicity, or religion,” he stated. He maintained that the exercise “did not reflect the values the ADC claimed to represent as an opposition platform seeking to provide Nigerians with an alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress.”

5. Outcome Is Inconsistent With Democratic Principles: Amaechi described the announced results as “inconsistent with democratic principles,” rounding out the reasons why Amaechi rejects ADC presidential primary results. He said the party’s duty is to “rescue the country from what he described as ‘impunity and gross mismanagement.’” By tolerating alleged vote buying, result writing, and disenfranchisement, he argued, the ADC undermines its own credibility ahead of 2027.

Conclusion

Amaechi’s rejection “is expected to heighten tensions within the ADC as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections.” With primaries already concluded across the country, his stance sets up a potential internal battle over legitimacy, party structure, and whether the ADC can present itself as a credible opposition.
