Police Raid Kidnappers’ Hideout in Delta, Recover Deadly Weapons in Major Security Breakthrough

In a major crackdown on violent crime, the Delta State Police Command has arrested a suspected kidnapper and recovered a cache of deadly firearms following a series of coordinated raids on criminal hideouts across the state. The operation, carried out by the CP Special Assignment Team, marks a significant step in the ongoing fight against kidnapping and armed robbery in Delta and neighboring states.


Intelligence-Led Operation Yields Results 

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe, the recent success was the result of credible intelligence and tactical precision. The command which insists on zero-tolerance to violent crime in two separate but significant breakthroughs that revealed a network of criminals terrorising Delta, Rivers, Imo, and Enugu States.


One of the key arrests includes 30-year-old Abubakar Hassan, a suspect for kidnapping, who hails from Niger State and who resided in the Woji area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Guided by solid intelligence, police operatives followed him down on May 20, 2025. During interrogation, Hassan—who is considered the leader of the gang—guided officers to a forest along the Ughelli-Ozoro axis, where a stash of weapons was bursted.


Weapons Captured Include AK-47 Rifles and Ammunition 

  • From the hideout, police captured:
  • Two (2) AK-47 rifles
  • Thirty-two (32) rounds of live ammunition
  • Four (4) AK-47 magazines


Efforts are ongoing to arrest other members of the gang and capture additional weapons.


Safer Highway Patrol Bumps on Armed Suspect 

Safer Highway Patrol officers, in a separate development on the same day, May 20, 2025, at around 4:30 p.m. blocked a suspicious vehicle along the Ughelli road. They thoroughly searched and captured:

  • One locally made revolver pump-action single-barrel gun
  • Fifteen (15) rounds of live cartridges


The suspect, 38-year-old Obi Ezekiel from Kogi State, was immediately apprehended, and inquiries into his activities are underway.


Delta CP Confirms Commitment to Public Safety 

Commenting on the operations, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, commended his officers for their vigilance and professionalism. He reiterated the command’s dedication to ensuring public safety and warned all criminal elements that there will be “no hiding place” in the state.

“These recent achievements are a testament to the professionalism, vigilance, and dedication of the command,” the CP stated. “We will continue to track, arrest, and prosecute those who threaten the peace and safety of our citizens.”

He also called on the public to remain calm and cooperate with the police by providing credible and timely information that can aid investigations.

The latest operations of Delta State Police Command shows a robust, no nonsense approach to curtailing the surge in kidnapping and armed robbery in the region. Hence, security forces escalate their crackdown, criminal networks are being degraded one syndicate at a time.
