Oyo State Government Explains Why Citizens Should Cooperate With Security Operatives in Securing the State

The Oyo State Government stated that there is critical need for citizens to cooperate with security operatives in order to ensure that the security efforts of the government yield the desired results. Governor Seyi Makinde explained that such cooperation is essential to prevent tragedies like the devastating Bodija explosion of January 16, 2024, which claimed lives and destroyed properties. The explosion, which occurred at Dejo Oyelese Close, Adeyi Avenue, Bodija, Ibadan, resulted from explosives improperly stored in a residential building. Governor Makinde highlighted that early information from vigilant residents could have averted the disaster. Therefore, citizens’ proactive collaboration with security agencies is paramount to preventing similar incidents.

On the first anniversary of the explosion, the governor reflected on the tragic event that shook the entire city during a match of the African Cup of Nations. The loud blast reverberated across Ibadan, creating widespread panic as emergency responders raced to the scene. Investigations revealed that the explosion was caused by a cache of explosives that detonated in a residential area. The blast led to the loss of five lives, extensive damage to surrounding buildings, and a significant disruption to community life. In response, the state government took immediate steps to address the aftermath and ensure justice for the victims.

Governor Makinde assured the public that the perpetrators responsible for the explosion have been arrested and are now facing terrorism charges. The suspects are currently in prison, undergoing trial for their actions. He reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to prosecuting those who endanger public safety and holding them accountable under the law. By enforcing legal measures, the government aims to deter future threats and strengthen the rule of law in Oyo State.

In addition to legal actions, the government has initiated efforts to provide relief and rehabilitation for affected residents. A relief disbursement committee, comprising local community members and representatives from professional organizations such as the Nigerian Society of Engineers, the Nigerian Bar Association, and the Nigeria Union of Journalists, has been established. This committee will develop a framework for distributing financial support to those impacted by the explosion. Governor Makinde also disclosed that contracts have been awarded to rebuild roads and infrastructure in the affected areas.

The governor further emphasized the importance of citizens actively participating in the security process. He explained that the government has invested heavily in security infrastructure, but these efforts can only succeed with the support of the people. Citizens are urged to report suspicious activities, unusual behavior, or the presence of dangerous materials to the authorities. Governor Makinde invoked the principle, “If you see something, say something,” stressing that timely information sharing can save lives and prevent catastrophic events.

Reflecting on the Bodija explosion, the governor lamented that the loss of lives and destruction of property were preventable had residents reported the storage of explosives. He urged everyone in the state to take security matters seriously and act responsibly by cooperating with security operatives. He offered prayers for the repose of the souls lost in the tragedy and comfort for their bereaved families. This call for collective vigilance underscores the vital role of citizen engagement in building a secure and peaceful society.
