The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olarewaju Ishola stated that the Lagos State’s position as the safest state in Nigeria is because of proactive policing, strategic security initiatives, and strong governmental support. The Commissioner of Police highlighted these factors during a press briefing, noting that diligent police efforts have dismantled several dangerous criminal gangs, including those targeting Uber drivers. The command’s success in cracking down on these violent crimes demonstrates the city’s robust security framework.
Among the recent breakthroughs was the arrest of a four-man gang responsible for the murder of an Uber driver in Lekki on January 9, 2025. The suspects, including a United States returnee, ordered a ride from Chevron to Obalende but lured the unsuspecting driver into a secluded area. There, they brutally stabbed him multiple times in the neck while attempting to steal his Toyota Camry. However, the swift intervention of good Samaritans thwarted their escape, leading to the immediate arrest of two suspects. Subsequent investigations resulted in the capture of the remaining two members. The victim’s body was deposited at the Mainland Hospital Yaba morgue.
CP Ishola further revealed that another gang, responsible for the murder of an Uber driver three months earlier, had also been apprehended. The suspects, aged between 32 and 40, confessed to kidnapping and killing Oluwaseyi Fowler in the Ajah area. They had stolen his Toyota Camry, sold it to a receiver, and led police operatives to the site where Fowler’s decomposed body was discovered. This marked the third incident involving Uber driver killings within a three-month period, underscoring the need for heightened caution among drivers. In response, the Commissioner advised ride-hailing drivers to limit passengers to one per trip, conduct thorough searches, and seat passengers in the front. Plans are underway to distribute security tips to drivers to mitigate further risks.
Despite these tragic incidents, CP Ishola maintained that Lagos remains the safest state in Nigeria due to the comprehensive security measures in place. He credited the seamless and secure Yuletide celebrations to the implementation of directives from the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Ebetokun. The Murtala Mohammed International Airport reportedly welcomed over 500,000 Nigerians from the diaspora during the festive season, with 90% choosing to stay in Lagos. The festivities were marked by peace and vibrant celebrations, reinforcing the city’s reputation for safety and efficient law enforcement.
The Commissioner acknowledged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for providing logistical support that strengthened the command’s operations. He also praised the dedication of police officers who adhered to humane practices while executing their duties. CP Ishola noted that the recovery of various arms and ammunition, including AK-47 rifles seized during the #EndSARS protests, reflected the command’s commitment to eradicating violent crime.
The achievements of the Lagos State Police Command illustrate a coordinated approach to security management, combining vigilance, community engagement, and government backing. While challenges persist, the proactive strategies employed continue to foster public confidence and maintain Lagos as a model of urban safety in Nigeria.
