IGP Explains Why He Ordered a Clampdown on the Perpetrators of the Nganzai Police Headquarters Attack in Borno State

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun stated that his order for an immediate clampdown on the attackers responsible for the explosion at Nganzai Divisional Police Headquarters in Borno State was due to the urgent need to secure justice for the fallen officers and reinforce national security. The deadly assault, which claimed the lives of Inspector Bartholomew Kalawa and Corporal Mustapha Huzaifat, highlighted the ongoing threats posed by violent extremists, necessitating decisive action to safeguard law enforcement personnel and the communities they protect. This response aims to ensure that perpetrators of such heinous acts face swift justice and prevent future attacks on critical security institutions.

The tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of January 9, 2025, when unknown assailants suspected to be members of the Boko Haram terrorist group launched an attack on the police station. According to Kenneth Daso, spokesman of the Borno Police Command, the officers on duty bravely engaged the attackers in a prolonged gun battle. Despite their gallant efforts, the terrorists managed to throw hand grenades into a shelter tent behind the division, resulting in fatal injuries to two officers. The loss of these brave men underscored the grave risks faced by security operatives combating terrorism and insurgency in Nigeria's northeastern region.

Responding to the incident, IGP Egbetokun directed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) for Zone 15, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, to mobilize all available resources to track down and apprehend those responsible. He also emphasized the importance of collaboration with other security agencies to enhance the efficiency of the operation and ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice. This directive reflects the IGP’s commitment to a coordinated and strategic approach in combating terrorism and securing the lives of law enforcement officers and civilians alike.

Expressing his condolences, the IGP assured the families of the deceased officers that their sacrifices would not be forgotten. He affirmed that all benefits and entitlements due to the fallen officers would be promptly paid to their families, acknowledging their dedication and ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. His message reinforced the police force's resolve to honor the courage and service of its personnel while pursuing comprehensive measures to enhance their safety in the field.

The police chief’s actions also send a broader message about the unwavering stance of Nigeria’s security institutions against terrorism and violence. The proactive engagement of the attackers by the officers on the ground demonstrates the resilience and readiness of the police to confront security threats head-on. However, the tragic loss of life highlights the urgent need for enhanced tactical support and intelligence coordination to mitigate risks and improve operational outcomes in conflict-prone areas.

The attack on Nganzai Police Station is a stark reminder of the continued challenges posed by insurgency in the region. By prioritizing swift justice for the perpetrators, the IGP aims to deter future assaults on security infrastructure, strengthen public confidence in law enforcement, and reinforce the nation’s collective resolve to overcome the scourge of terrorism. This decisive response is part of a broader strategy to restore peace and stability, ensuring that acts of violence do not undermine the rule of law or the safety of Nigerian citizens.
