Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State stated that his decision to appoint Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo was because Owoade’s selection followed extensive consultations and divinations carried out by the Oyo kingmakers, the Oyomesi, who presented his name as their preferred candidate. This appointment aims to resolve lingering disputes that have affected the community since the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III on April 22, 2022.
The announcement of Owoade’s appointment was
made public in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information
and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade. He confirmed that due diligence was
observed in the selection process, stating, “Prince Abimbola Akeem
Owoade, after thorough consultations and divinations, has been
recommended by the Oyomesi and approved by Governor Seyi Makinde as the
new Alaafin of Oyo.” This move, the government believes, will stabilize
the traditional institution and foster harmony within the community.
In
addition, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy
Affairs, Ademola Ojo, noted that the official endorsement of Owoade as
Alaafin has brought an end to the legal and social disputes that
followed the former monarch’s demise. Ojo expressed optimism that the
resolution of this leadership vacuum would strengthen communal bonds and
restore confidence in the traditional leadership system. He called on
all residents of Oyo State to support the new monarch and participate
actively in celebrating this pivotal moment in the history of the
kingdom.
Oyelade also expressed the government’s hope that
Owoade’s reign would bring about significant socio-economic development
and reinforce the cultural heritage of Oyo. “We pray that his reign
brings progress and harmony to the people of Oyo and strengthens the
historic legacy of the Alaafin institution,” he added.
However,
despite the governor’s directive for a fresh selection process, not all
traditional stakeholders have agreed with the outcome. On Thursday,
five influential members of the Oyomesi—led by the Basorun of Oyo, High
Chief Yusuf Akinade—challenged the legitimacy of the process. Along with
High Chiefs Wakeel Akindele, Hamzat Yusuf, and two warrant chiefs
representing other key positions, they maintained that Prince Lukman
Gbadegesin had already been chosen as the Alaafin-elect. The group’s
legal counsel, Adekunle Sobaloju, described the governor’s intervention
as unlawful, urging a suspension of further actions until ongoing legal
proceedings are concluded.
Despite these reservations, the
state government remains firm in its position, emphasizing the
transparent and traditional nature of Owoade’s selection. Residents and
stakeholders have been urged to respect the outcome, recognizing the
governor’s prerogative in confirming the new Alaafin. As the legal
battles continue, attention shifts to how Prince Abimbola Owoade will
navigate the challenges ahead and uphold the revered traditions and
responsibilities of his office. His leadership marks the beginning of a
new chapter for the ancient kingdom of Oyo, with hopes pinned on
stability, cultural preservation, and community growth.
