Eric Chelle Explains Why He Could Not Refuse the Offer to Coach Super Eagles

Eric Chelle, the newly appointed coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, explained that he could not refuse the offer from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) because leading the national team is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He described the role as one of the most prestigious positions in African football and a significant milestone in his coaching career. Chelle expressed deep gratitude for the chance to lead a team renowned for its rich football history and immense talent.

Chelle, a former Ligue 1 defender and coach of Mali’s national team, officially accepted the role last week following the resignation of former coach Finidi George. Speaking after his final match with MC Oran in Algeria, where his team secured a 1-0 victory over USM Setif in the Algerian Cup, Chelle made it clear that his decision to leave Algeria was driven by the extraordinary opportunity presented by the NFF. “This is my last meeting with you, and it marks the end of my adventure here,” he told reporters. “From Monday, I will be in Nigeria to start a new chapter. It’s impossible to decline the chance to manage the Super Eagles, one of the best teams in Africa and the world.”

Chelle’s appointment was confirmed by the NFF’s Executive Committee after a recommendation from the Technical and Development Committee. He will be unveiled in a formal ceremony at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja. The event, scheduled for 11:00 a.m., will introduce Chelle to the public and reveal the names of his assistant coaches. His coaching crew will lead the Super Eagles B team at the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) in East Africa before shifting focus to the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March.

NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau expressed confidence in Chelle’s ability to inspire fresh energy, innovative thinking, and a positive mindset within the Super Eagles as they continue their World Cup qualifying campaign. “We understand the passion Nigerians have for football,” Gusau noted. “There have been mixed reactions to Chelle’s appointment, but we appeal to Nigerians to unite in support of him. We believe he has the qualities to succeed, and the NFF will provide all necessary backing.”

Chelle holds a UEFA Pro Licence and brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles. Under his leadership, Mali’s Aiglons reached the semifinals of the Africa Cup of Nations, narrowly missing out on a place in the final after a defeat by host nation Ivory Coast. His tactical acumen and ability to manage high-pressure situations have been recognized across the continent, positioning him as a promising choice for Nigeria’s national team.

As excitement builds ahead of his official unveiling, Chelle’s appointment marks the beginning of a new era for Nigerian football. Fans and stakeholders alike are eager to see how his leadership will shape the Super Eagles' performance on the international stage. His commitment to excellence and passion for the sport signal a promising future for one of Africa’s most beloved football teams.
