Benin's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Explains Why Niger's Diplomat was Summoned

In a significant diplomatic move, the Benin Republic recently summoned a Nigerien diplomat following serious allegations by Niger’s junta leader, Abdourahamane Tchiani. Tchiani accused Benin of backing terrorist activities in West Africa, a claim that has caused considerable tension between the two neighboring countries. Benin's response marks a formal protest against these allegations, which they have described as baseless and inflammatory.

Benin’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through a statement issued by Foreign Minister Olushegun Bakari via the social media platform X, confirmed that the Nigerien chargé d’affaires was summoned to provide clarification on these serious accusations. The statement emphasized that the accusations made against Benin were unfounded and reiterated the country's commitment to peace and collaboration with its neighbors. The Ministry’s statement read, “Due to the unfounded accusations made against our country, the chargee d’affaires of Niger has been summoned.”

The Ministry also sent a letter of protest, firmly rejecting the accusations and emphasizing Benin’s dedication to peace and regional stability. This letter underscored Benin’s commitment to maintaining harmonious relations with its neighbors and highlighted the potential negative impact of such baseless accusations on regional stability.

The diplomatic tension between Benin and Niger stems from a Christmas Day address by Tchiani, during which he accused Benin of serving as a rear base for terrorists aiming to destabilize Niger. These accusations have come amidst ongoing regional challenges following the military coup in Niger that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum in July 2023. The political turmoil in Niger has exacerbated existing tensions and has led to various accusations and counter-accusations between neighboring countries.

Relations between Niger and Benin have been strained for several years due to various disputes, including issues related to oil exports, border closures, and trade disagreements. Despite these challenges, both countries had shown signs of reconciliation recently, including the appointment of new ambassadors, which indicated a willingness to mend their strained relationship. However, the recent accusations by Tchiani have threatened to undo these efforts, prompting Benin to take a firm stand in rejecting the claims.

Benin’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its dedication to dialogue and fraternal cooperation, warning that baseless accusations could undermine regional stability. The Ministry stated, “Benin remains committed to dialogue and to fraternal collaboration between the two nations.” This statement highlights Benin’s focus on resolving disputes through diplomatic means and maintaining regional peace.

The allegations against Benin were part of a broader narrative by Tchiani, which also implicated Nigeria. Tchiani accused Nigeria of hosting a French military base with the intention of destabilizing Niger. This claim was swiftly dismissed by Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who labeled it as unfounded. Ribadu asserted that Nigeria would never allow a foreign military base on its soil and emphasized the country’s commitment to regional peace and stability.

The situation has drawn reactions from other countries in the region, reflecting the complex web of relationships and tensions that characterize West African politics. Benin continues to advocate for peaceful and cooperative relations, aiming to mitigate any potential fallout from the accusations made by Niger’s junta leader. This incident highlights the delicate nature of international relations in West Africa, where historical grievances and current political dynamics often intersect.
