Abia State Police Command Explains Why it Disbanded its Anti-Cult Unit

The Abia State Police Command said it disbanded its Anti-Cultism Unit due to unprofessional conduct and incivility towards members of the public. This decisive action, announced by the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, aligns with the broader vision of the Inspector General of Police to foster a law-abiding, service-driven, and people-friendly police force. Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, emphasized that professional integrity is critical to maintaining public trust, and misconduct will not be tolerated within the force.

The disbandment was accompanied by disciplinary actions against specific officers. Corporal Okonkwo Ebuka, previously attached to the Area Command in Aba but on special duty at Isuochi, was demoted to the rank of Constable. This demotion followed a thorough administrative process where he was tried in an orderly room and found guilty of discreditable conduct and incivility. The decision reflects the command’s commitment to accountability and serves as a stern warning to other officers.

The command reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for actions that could tarnish the image of the police. CP Isa underscored that professionalism and respect for human rights are non-negotiable principles, essential to building a trustworthy and effective policing system. The public was encouraged to report any further cases of misconduct through the command’s Complaint Response Unit, highlighting a commitment to transparency and responsiveness to citizen grievances.

The disbandment of the Anti-Cultism Unit is a step towards addressing systemic issues within law enforcement and restoring public confidence. Cult-related violence remains a significant concern in many communities, and the effectiveness of anti-cult operations depends on officers adhering to ethical standards. By removing those who abuse their positions, the police force aims to ensure that law enforcement serves the people rather than undermines their rights.
