INTRO: An orphanage ran by Mrs Elizabeth Oroyemi which was located at the Opa Area of Ile-Ife was sealed off, Friday by the Osun State officials led by the Commissioner for Women, Children and Social Affairs, Mrs. Bukola Olaboopo. The proprietor of the orphanage was reported to have slumped, and was resuscitated as a result of the operation; and a total of 42 inmates were rescued and sent to another orphanage.
The reasons for sealing the orphanage was that the facility was untidy, and used as baby factory; the workers were unprofessional; and the orphans were malnourished.
According to the Commissioner for Women, Children and Social Affairs, “we suspected that the facility is used for activities such as baby factory which is completely unacceptable to Osun State Government. And the operator had earlier been given the opportunity to address the shortcomings observed by a committee set up about five years ago, though she moved to a new facility, the activities in the facility is still the same.
“The social workers working in the facility are unprofessional, the environment where it is operating is totally untidy, while most children in her care were malnourished and exceeded the number approved by the Child Right Law 2013 of the State among others”.
“All the evacuees were given food and other confectionaries before they were relocated in batches to various standard orphanage centres across the State for best care."
It is disgusting what people could do for money. Orphanage institutions should not be a business venture. It is a sheer work of mercy. The business-inclined status of the orphanage as sealed could explain why the children in the facility are malnourished as the proprietor might have been interested in profits and not the well-being of the inmates. Bad. Governments across Nigeria should replicate action in their respective states to save the situations of man’s inhumanity to man.
