List of Reasons Explains the News That NLC and TUC Threaten Strike Over State of Emergency in Rivers

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Rivers State have strongly condemned the state of emergency by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on March 18, 2025. The organized labour groups described the move as baseless and unjustified, arguing that it unlawfully suspended the elected Governor, Deputy Governor, and House of Assembly members chosen by the people of Rivers State.

Labour leaders, including Comrade Alex Agwanwor of the NLC, Comrade Ikechukwu Onyefuru of the TUC, and Comrade Chuku Emecheta (JP), jointly signed a statement denouncing the emergency rule. They warned that the decision is already causing severe economic hardship, particularly for local government workers who have yet to receive their salaries. The non-payment of wages has left many workers in financial distress, exacerbating the ongoing economic challenges in the country.

Furthermore, labour leaders emphasized that Rivers State holds significant economic importance in Nigeria, particularly in the Niger Delta region. They expressed concerns that the state of emergency would deter potential investors who had previously shown interest in the state's development under the "New Rivers Vision" initiative. With Nigeria already struggling with inflation, currency devaluation, high exchange rates, and rising unemployment, they argued that the situation in Rivers could worsen the countryā€™s economic outlook.

While acknowledging the need for maintaining law and order, the labour unions insisted that any governmental action must be in line with the Nigerian Constitution and should not jeopardize workers' rights, job security, or financial stability. They urged the federal government to prioritize the welfare of citizens over political interests and called for an immediate reversal of the state of emergency and the reinstatement of elected officials.

Labour leaders also advised the federal government to engage in sincere dialogue to prevent further escalation of the crisis in Rivers State. In the meantime, they have urged all workers to remain calm and continue their duties while awaiting a response. However, they warned that if their demands are not met within a reasonable timeframe, the organized labour movement may be compelled to take strategic union actions, including a nationwide strike, which could significantly disrupt economic activities across the country.
