Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju has raised concerns that Nigeria is gradually descending into full-scale dictatorship because Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, expressed fears over threats to his life. In a statement shared on X, Adeyanju condemned the threats against Obi, asserting that no harm or persecution should befall him for being an outspoken opposition figure in the country. He emphasized that holding the government accountable and engaging in constructive criticism are acts of patriotism that should be respected rather than criminalized.
Adeyanju further highlighted his growing alarm at the erosion of democratic values in Nigeria. According to him, the nation is moving dangerously toward a one-party state and authoritarian rule, with signs of repression becoming increasingly evident. He described Obi's concerns as both timely and accurate, urging vigilance and collective action to safeguard the principles of democracy and free expression. Adeyanju’s comments reflect broader fears among civil society activists about shrinking political space and rising intolerance for dissenting voices in Nigeria. His call for the protection of opposition leaders reinforces the importance of upholding democratic freedoms in the face of growing authoritarian tendencies.
