Seven (7) Reasons Why Oba Akeem Owoade’s Emergence as Alaafin of Oyo in Nigeria is Seen as Divine

The emergence of Oba Akeem Owoade as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo has sparked widespread attention, not only because of the historical significance of the throne but also due to the monarch’s insistence that his ascension was not politically influenced but divinely orchestrated. The compelling reasons drawn from the monarch’s own reflections and the sentiments shared during his thanksgiving service are hereunder discussed.

The reasons why Oba Akeem Owoade’s emergence as Alaafin of Oyo is seen as divine are:

1. Absence of Political Influence: Oba Owoade publicly declared that he had never met Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State or former Senator Monsurat Sunmonu prior to his selection. This revelation counters public assumptions of political endorsement and underscores the purity and neutrality of his emergence.

2. Lack of Desperation or Manipulation: In his own words, the new Alaafin confessed that he was neither desperate nor scheming for the throne. This lack of ambition or backdoor lobbying adds credibility to his claim that his emergence was purely a matter of divine selection, not personal ambition.

3. Peaceful Acceptance of Traditional Rites: Oba Owoade willingly underwent the 21-day traditional Oro Ipebi rites, which concluded on March 29, 2025. This process, deeply rooted in Yoruba customs, is often seen as a spiritual preparation for any new Alaafin, reaffirming the sacredness of the stool.

4. Unity Appeal to Former Contestants: The monarch extended an olive branch to those who contested the throne alongside him. His call for unity and cooperation reflects humility and a broader vision of collective progress rather than personal victory. This action reinforces his divine posture by shunning rivalry and embracing peace.

5. Strong Christian Values and Spiritual Guidance: The thanksgiving service held at the Anglican Cathedral in Oyo, attended by prominent clergy, including former CAN President Revd. Supo Ayokunle, positioned Oba Owoade as a monarch deeply rooted in spiritual convictions. Ayokunle even likened his journey to that of King David, emphasizing divine favour and responsibility.

6. Commitment to Ethical Leadership: Oba Owoade pledged to uphold transparency, integrity, and accountability in leading Oyo. He assured the people that he meant every word he spoke, signaling a refreshing departure from leadership driven by self-interest. Such sincerity is often interpreted as evidence of divine inspiration.

7. Encouragement of Community Support and Prayer: During the sermon, citizens were encouraged to support the new monarch with prayers, love, and unity. The emphasis on communal backing and divine direction further cements the perception that his reign is not a solo journey, but one led by spiritual providence and public goodwill.
