The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has cautioned traditional rulers in the state against engaging in partisan politics, urging them instead to focus on maintaining peace and security in their domains.
Speaking at a meeting with traditional rulers at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Ibas emphasized the importance of neutrality in leadership, stating that monarchs play a crucial role in fostering stability within their communities. The retired vice admiral and former Chief of Naval Staff expressed his deep concern over the persistent instability in Rivers State, stressing that political conflicts should not undermine the regionās development.
Commitment to Restoring Stability
Ibas, who was appointed as the Sole Administrator following the stateās political crisis, reaffirmed his administrationās commitment to restoring peace. He lamented the constant unrest in the state, stating that it pained him to see Rivers, a vital economic hub, embroiled in turmoil.
āAs a former naval chief, my duty has always been to protect lives, and I remain committed to restoring peace in Rivers State,ā Ibas declared. āThis state is too important to be left in crisis. A society without order is a society without progress.ā
He assured the traditional rulers that his administration would work tirelessly to return Rivers to a position of stability and prosperity. He emphasized that political interests must not come at the expense of the stateās peace and development.
Warning Against Partisan Politics
Ibas urged the traditional rulers to steer clear of political affiliations and avoid taking sides in political disputes. He warned that their words, actions, and even body language should reflect their neutrality.
āAs traditional rulers, your role is to provide guidance and ensure harmony within your communities,ā he said. āYou must not allow yourselves to be used as tools in political battles. Security is the responsibility of all, not just the government.ā
The administrator stressed the need for traditional rulers to strengthen communication with their subjects and serve as mediators in conflict resolution. He pointed out that leadership at all levels must prioritize the well-being of the people over political gains.
A Call for Collaboration
Ibas acknowledged the challenges ahead but reassured the monarchs that his administration was open to collaboration and constructive suggestions. He emphasized that achieving lasting peace would require a collective effort from all stakeholders, including community leaders, security agencies, and the people of Rivers State.
In response, the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Chike Worlu-Wodo, pledged the support of the traditional rulers to the administratorās efforts. He described Ibasā appointment as a positive step for the state and assured him that the council was committed to peace and stability.
āAs traditional rulers, our primary duty is to ensure peace in our kingdoms, clans, and communities,ā Worlu-Wodo stated. āWe urge you to see yourself as a mediator who brings opposing sides together in the interest of the state.ā
He further expressed confidence in Ibasā ability to restore order, noting that his leadership experience in the military would serve him well in addressing security concerns.
A Plea for Lasting Peace
The traditional rulers collectively appealed for unity and cooperation among all political actors in the state. They acknowledged that the ongoing crisis had affected economic activities and social harmony in Rivers and urged all parties to embrace dialogue over conflict.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to peace and security, with both the government and traditional rulers agreeing to work together to ensure a stable and prosperous Rivers State.
As Rivers State continues to navigate its political challenges, the administratorās call for neutrality among traditional rulers serves as a crucial reminder that leadership should always prioritize the collective good over partisan interests.
