The Nigerian Army stated that the recent redeployment of senior officers was due to the need for a more dynamic leadership structure to effectively tackle evolving security challenges. The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, emphasized that the reshuffle is part of a broader strategy to enhance operational efficiency, improve military leadership, and sustain the momentum in ongoing security operations across the country. This proactive approach aims to address terrorism, insurgency, and other threats to national stability.
In a statement issued by the Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the redeployment affects key positions at the highest levels of command, staff, and training institutions. Among the major changes are the appointments of new Principal Staff Officers at the Army Headquarters, General Officers Commanding (GOCs), Corps Commanders, and Commandants. These changes are expected to inject fresh perspectives and strengthen leadership capacity within the force.
Major General LA Fejokwu has been redeployed from the National Defence College to the Department of Army Administration, where he will serve as the Chief of Administration (Army). Major General GU Chibuisi, formerly of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, has been appointed Chief of Civil Military Affairs. Similarly, Major General AS Ndalolo moves from the Nigerian Army Resource Centre to become the Chief of Training (Army). These appointments are crucial for improving administrative efficiency, fostering civil-military relations, and enhancing training frameworks, respectively.
The shake-up also impacts strategic field commands. Major General OT Olatoye, previously with the Nigerian Army School of Infantry, has been appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division/Commander of the Joint Task Force (JTF) South-East Operation UDO KA (OPUK). His role will be instrumental in managing security operations in the South-East region. Major General EF Oyinlola moves from the Department of Military Secretary to assume the role of GOC 3 Division/Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH). These appointments are part of a deliberate effort to strengthen command structures and improve operational readiness in areas plagued by insecurity.
Furthermore, the acting appointments of Major General AGL Haruna and Major General IA Ajose have been confirmed as substantive. Major General Haruna will continue as GOC 7 Division/Commander Sector 1 JTF North-East Operation HADIN KAI, while Major General Ajose remains GOC 8 Division/Commander Sector 2 JTF North-West Operation FANSAN YANMA. Their confirmed statuses reflect confidence in their leadership during critical national security operations.
Lieutenant General Oluyede urged the newly appointed officers to bring renewed energy, dedication, and innovation to their respective roles. He reiterated the importance of maintaining a relentless focus on current operations against insurgents, terrorists, and other criminal elements undermining Nigeria's security. Additionally, he stressed that the welfare of troops must be prioritized, highlighting the Army’s commitment to the morale and well-being of its personnel.
The redeployment comes amid ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Army to adapt its leadership and strategies to the complex and evolving nature of contemporary security threats. By repositioning experienced officers into strategic roles, the Army aims to consolidate its gains in the fight against insecurity and enhance its overall effectiveness in safeguarding the nation.
